Werner Ends Leipzig Campaign as Team’s Top Scorer

Timo Werner has ended his time with RB Leipzig in fashion, scoring twice and solidifying RB Leipzig’s birth to the UEFA Champions League next season. The 2-1 win over Augsburg on Saturday was a tough affair that took 80th minute heroics by the German superstar to grab the win.

“It’s been a wonderful four years here in Leipzig,” said Werner after the win. “I was accepted and felt great here the entire time. That was also a reason for me to be able to perform well. Another was the team. They were always behind me, even when it wasn’t going so well and, during the week, I thank my teammates for our time together and the friendships I’ve made.”

Werner leaves having scored 95 goals for Leipzig in all competitions. He also finishes at the Bundesliga runner-up for the Golden Boot with 28 this campaign. The numbers were impressive and it will be difficult for Leipzig to find a proper replacement for such a fantastic striker.

From here Werner will depart the team and head to Chelsea in London. The team will have to coup without his goal output in August as they continue the UEFA Champions League quarterfinals. Many teams will have changes and Leipzig will certainly be seen as a dark-horse favorite.

“I think it’s evident that Timo Werner will leave a big hole in our team,” said manager Julian Nagelsmann. “I wish him all the best in London and hope that he can reproduce the same level of performance there.”

Leipzig end the Bundesliga in third place, their second best feat since joining in 2017. The rebuild with Nagelsmann is now in full swing with not just Werner departing, but also Ralf Rangnick who helped to construct the team that is now looking for a new direction in 2021.
