Game Recap: Salzburg Crush Wien; Take Command of League

One win and Red Bull Salzburg will clinch their seventh consecutive Austrian Bundesliga crown after a 7-2 crushing of Rapid Wien on Wednesday afternoon. Four of the seven goals came in the first half, unleashing a barrage that swept the home team in a storm.

“It is incredible how we performed today,” said defender Albert Vallci. “We were playing with total determination the whole time. If everything comes off like it did today, nobody will stop us. We are now really confident of winning the title.”

The game didn’t start perfectly for Salzburg after a ball in behind the defense caused a bit of chaos. A stumble by the back line and Ercan Kara was in one goal for the game’s first tally. Salzburg responded immediately when Enock Mwepu took an effort on goal and then Patson Daka hit the post before Noah Okafor finally found the equalizer. Minutes later Daka found Mwepu again, this time unleashing him on goal for the lead. Dominik Szoboszlai scored before the half and the game was all but over.

The second half saw more of the same with Salzburg punishing Wien and cruising to a victory in the Austrian Klassiker. Zlatko Junuzovic scored a stunner from outside the box to put the exclamation point on the effort and seal his team’s dominance.

With the win, Salzburg move closer to the double. A win on Sunday would clinch the title and give Jesse Marsch his first league title as a manager. All that stands in their way is TSV Hartsberg, who have been on the downturn, losing three of their last four games.
