Game Recap: WAC Holds Salzburg to Scoreless Draw

The goal-scoring came to an end as RZ Pellets WAC held Red Bull Salzburg to a scoreless draw on Wednesday afternoon. Goalkeeper Alex Kofler made the difference, stopping more than a few efforts by some of Salzburg’s best strikers.

“We tried everything over the 90 minutes,” said manager Jesse Marsch. “Ultimately, the mix of a lack of precision and a strong rear-guard effort cost us a win.”

The first half saw the usual suspects get efforts on goal. Dominik Szoboszlai made dangerous runs in behind the defense but was left few options on goal. Defender Jerome Onguene also had a strong effort on goal with a headed effort that was stopped by Kofler. Set pieces shoot the WAC defense but nothing was dynamic enough to put a goal on the board.

The onslaught continued in the second half with Andre Ramalho’s effort that send Kofler diving to keep the ball out of the net. WAC did have a few moments of their own, creating set pieces but not forcing any major efforts on net.

“We made a good start to the match and created a lot of chances,” said defender Albert Vallci. “In my opinion we should have been two goals ahead in the first half and we didn’t manage that.”

Salzburg is still atop the Austrian Bundesliga with a five point lead over Rapid Wien. With five games remaining in the schedule, Marsch and his team are hoping to lock in another league title in the next week and focus on the upcoming off-season.
