Official: Timo Werner Joins Chelsea

Timo Werner has officially joined Chelsea FC as per a statement from RB Leipzig. The 24-year-old German striker has been with Leipzig since their ascension to the Bundesliga in 2016, scoring 93 goals for the club over that span.

“I had four great years in Leipzig,” said Werner. “I can only thank those who made it so easy for me from the start at RB Leipzig, and supported me during some tough times. We achieved a lot together and I was able to develop a lot as a young player.”

Werner represented the top development project for Leipzig who signed the youngster from Stuttgart and gave him the platform to become one the top strikers in the world. His move to Chelsea comes after months of speculation that Jurgen Klopp and Liverpool would be his destination. The COVID-19 pandemic changed all of that as Liverpool looked to tighten their belt financially, denying the English champions-to-be of their future prize.

In came Chelsea FC who triggered the 50 million-plus Euro release clause a little over a week ago. The move came as a surprise as Chelsea appeared to be more interested in growing their young players but have done a reverse to sign the proven German star.

“You can’t replace a player like Timo,” said Sporting Director Markus Krosche. “He will leave a big hole, both in a sporting sense and as a person. It’s our job to fill that hole the best we can.”

One of those options could be Red Bull Salzburg striker Patson Daka. The Zambian has scored 20-plus goals this season and has emerged as the next rising star after the departure of Erling Haaland. Leizpig will be cash flush heading into the transfer window with the need to replace Werner before the restart of the Champions League in August.
