Leipzig to Resume Champions League in August

RB Leipzig will return to the Champions League in the quarterfinals this August after UEFA decided how they will handle the continental competition. The tournament will continue with single leg games starting on August 12th in Lisbon, Portugal.

“It’s really great news that the Champions League season will be completed,” said Leipzig Sporting Director Markus Krosche. “It would’ve been a real shame for us to not get this chance.”

Leipzig have been a Cinderella-story in this tournament, not just making it to the knockout stage but scoring wins over competition regulars Benfica and Tottenham Hotspur in order to reach the competition’s quarterfinal. Who they will play remains to be seen as the draw will take place on July 10th. There are still second-legs of the round of 16 that remain which also need to be decided. Within that are major teams such as Real Madrid, Manchester City, Barcelona and Chelsea FC.

Leipzig will be done with the Bundesliga by that point and focused on rebuilding their team ahead of the competition. Timo Werner is expected to not rejoin the team and could even be on the Chelsea squad when they resume play.
