Report: Arsenal Abandoning Pursuit of Upamecano

Arsenal has been linked with the RB Leipzig 21-year-old defender Dayot Upamecano for most of the year but now it appears that they have given up their pursuit. The news comes from Tuttosport as rumors of a release clause surface.

Upamecano, who has been a part of the second best defense in the Bundesliga this season, has become a target for several teams but Arsenal have been the most likely suitor. However the COVID-19 pandemic, mixed with a more frugal approach over the last decade, appear to have put a dent in their plans. The likely fee according to Transfermarkt is over 40 million pounds. Such a transfer may not be possible under the current circumstances.

Several reporters have mentioned that Arsenal are in the market to improve their defense but Upamecano’s performance has made him a high-value target that only cash-flush teams may be able to support. Names like Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona and Atletico Madrid have been brought up nothing of substance has come forward.

The French defender has come up through the Red Bull system and has proven that the process can produce top-level talent. Starting at the famed Liefering, the feeder club for Red Bull Salzburg, Upamecano moved to the Austrian club in 2016, making 15 starts before moving to RB Lepzig. It was at the age of 19 that he made his mark, playing in 28 league games and making the East German clubs one of the best defensive teams in the Bundesliga.

The loss of Upamecano would be a major blow but proof that Leipzig can produced top tier talent for major teams around Europe. We’ve already seen Chelsea pay top price for Timo Werner and others are expected to make the move over the next few seasons.
