Game Recap: Salzburg Gets Revenge Against LASK

Red Bull Salzburg gained a measure of revenge against their rivals LASK with a 3-1 win that sank the controversial team’s Austrian Bundesliga title hope. Goals from Dominik Szoboszlai, Patson Daka and Albert Vallci provided all the fire power necessary for Salzburg to put their hopes of a seventh consecutive title within reach.

“Our mentality and determination were a big part of our goal,” said manager Jesse Marsch after the game. “That is always an advantage as the opponents have to come at you.”

Szoboszlai put Salzburg ahead before the 10th minute when the team worked a brilliant sequence of passes that saw the Hungarian clear on goal. Working past the keeper, Szoboszlai was able to maneuver towards an empty net to open the scoring. Three minutes later Daka doubled the score by weaving past the LASK defense and poking the ball past the keeper.

Salzburg continued to push the game but did surrender a goal to LASK midway through the second half. The away side tried their best but couldn’t stop the confident Salzburg as they once again doubled the lead in the 80th minute with a Vallci goal.

“LASK played well in the second half,” said Marsch. “I am proud of our boys but we have more we need to do. Such moments are good for our confidence, but the league is not over yet.”

Salzburg maintain their seven point lead over Rapid Wien who have also put together a solid winning streak. Marsch and his team still have six games remaining but their confidence may be enough to clinch another title and the first for Marsch as a manager of a European club.
