Game Recap: Olmo Scores Twice to Lift Leipzig

Dani Olmo scored his first two goals for RB Leipzig and that was all they needed to defeat Hoffenheim on Friday afternoon. The Spanish midfielder has toyed with scoring for Julian Nagelsmann in the past but was finally able to reward the team during a game where they were largely out played.

Hoffenheim, who recently replaced their manager, came into the game with extra motivation. Europa League qualification was within sight but Leipzig had higher aspirations and were clinical when they needed to be in order to get the three points. It didn’t start well for Leipzig who were hit fast by the opposition, specifically former Red Bull Salzburg striker Munas Dabbur. It took only 5 minutes before he earned a handball penalty which VAR rescinded.

Leipzig didn’t waste time in capitalizing on their good fortune. Nordi Mukiele took the ball up the field and found Olmo in the box, past a diving Hoffenheim defender. The Spaniard poked the ball past the keeper to give Leipzig their game-winner. Two minutes later, Olmo scored again after a cutback from Marcel Sabitzer opened up space for a pace to the scorer in the box.

Hoffenheim didn’t give up and came back with a vengeance in the second half. They pushed Leipzig to the brink, hitting the post and out numbering Leipzig in the corners category. Peter Gulacsi was impressive, garnering the clean sheet and guiding his team to just one point back of Dortmund in second place.

Leipzig will return home to play Fortuna Dusseldorf on Wednesday, hoping that they can keep their momentum towards clinching a Champions League position.
