Game Recap: Szoboszlai Hat Trick Lifts Salzburg

It was another dominant performance from Red Bull Salzburg with Dominik Szoboszlai scoring a hat trick to sink SK Sturm Graz by a final score of 5-1 on Wednesday afternoon. The league leaders had the game well in hand, scoring four goals in the first half to cruise to victory.

“Fortunately, I was able to help the team by scoring three goals,” said Szoboszlai following the game. “I hope there are more to follow in the future. We came out of the Corona break with the aim of not losing any of our remaining matches and becoming champions.”

The next generation was on full display when the 19-year-old Hungarian scored from a free kick in the eighth minute. He followed it up with another goal two minutes later as Sturm players hung their heads, knowing the difficult task in front of them. To their credit, they did pull one goal back before the 20th minute but were quickly knocked back by a Patson Daka goal to make it 3-1. Szoboszlai ended the half with a hat trick, putting little doubt into the game’s result.

Defensively, Salzburg was better than many of their previous games. Gone is the rust from the pandemic break and manager Jesse Marsch has the team playing with tremendous confidence. The team has only surrendered one goal since returning and scored a staggering 16 goals with two players garnering hat tricks.

The win pushes Salzburg closer to their seventh consecutive league title. They now have a seven point lead over second place Rapid Wien and could put the league away for good when the two teams meet on June 24th. Next up will be a rivalry game against LASK, who have sunk to fourth in the table following a deduction of points due to improper training during the pandemic.
