Report: Timo Werner Joining Chelsea

London-based English Premier League club Chelsea FC have moved into first place in the race for RB Leipzig striker Timo Werner. The report from Sky Sports says that the deal is expected to be finalized next week, with the over $62 million release clause being triggered before the deadline on June 15th.

Werner had been linked to Liverpool non-stop with rumors of conversations between the German striker and manager Jurgen Klopp. For years now, it seemed as if the move to Ansfield was inevitable. However, as usual, the cash-flush Chelsea may have swooped in to steal him away from Liverpool. This is nothing new for the two clubs as years ago Chelsea did the same thing by stripping the northern club of Fernando Torres after an impressive stint.

Liverpool’s financial situation is what eventually drew other clubs to Werner. At first, it seemed as if there was no other option for Leipzig star. However, the recent pandemic has hit the ownership both in their investments in England as well as the United States. Teams like Chelsea and Manchester United quickly smelled blood in the water and moved in on the prize.

Sources have indicated that Werner would be more than happy to play for Chelsea. His interests lie with remaining in the Champions League and Chelsea have a history of success in the competition as well as domestic victories. Werner would join Frank Lampard’s young team despite praising Klopp as one of the best managers in the world.

The finality of the situation will allow Leipzig to easily prepare for next season. The Werner drama has kept the East German club from moving forward but now they can make decisions on loanees such as Patrik Schick as well as other possibilities to bolster the squad. We’ll know next week if this final chapter has been written on Werner’s Bundesliga story.
