Recap: Salzburg Return with Win Over Rapid

Red Bull Salzburg returned to the Austrian Bundesliga with a 2-0 win over Rapid Vienna on Thursday afternoon, solidifying their place atop the league. Goals from Patson Daka and Noah Okafor capped a win that was messy upon return to play.

Salzburg started quickly but it was apparent that both teams were still recovering from the long layoff due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fouls littered the first half and several injuries forced early substitutions for Vienna. Overall it was a disjointed effort from both teams but produced a breakthrough early in the contest. Patson Daka scored his 18th goal of the league campaign with an impressive header that beat the Vienna keeper. Daka was on the run but able to direct the ball up and over both the keeper and defender.

Rapid returned fire quickly but were unable to find the equalizer. One major save from Cican Stankovic at near point blank range kept Salzburg in the game as they entered the half ahead by one goal. The home team continued the onslaught in the second half with Dominik Szoboszlai nearly doubling the lead with a freekick that rang off the post. Young forward Karim Adeyemi also nearly doubled the lead but was called offside despite the replay showing otherwise.

I wasn’t until stoppage time that Salzburg sealed the game when Okafor scored after a precise pass from Adeyemi. The game was won, giving Salzburg another boost following their Austrian Cup win less than one week ago.

The win moves Salzburg them five points ahead of second place RZ Pellets WAC who overtook LASK following their loss. At this point it appears that it is Salzburg’s title to lose as Marsch looks for the double and potentially their eighth straight league title.
