Despite rumors to the contrary, Leipzig midfielder Timo Werner may still sign with Liverpool in the upcoming transfer window. Werner has been scouted by several clubs throughout Europe and is currently in second place in the Bundesliga Golden Boot race with 24 goals.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is still making a case for the German striker, according to the Guardian. The current trio of strikers- Mohammed Salah, Sadio Mane, and Roberto Firmino- dominate the English Premier League with 47 goals between them. Liverpool is on track to lift their first modern-era league trophy, with EPL play slated to return June 17. But as all three players approach the age of 30, Klopp has to look to the future. Werner is younger but has already proven himself on the pitch.
Rumors have recently hinted a move to Serie A. The German international is reportedly not interested in a move to Italy. Piero Ausilio, Inter Milan’s Sporting Director, put that story to rest. “I know his thoughts about his future and we’ll not sign him,” he told the Guardian. Werner has also earned attention from Manchester United and Chelsea in the English Premier League.
Werner and RB Leipzig had advanced to the Quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions League. Their definitive win over Tottenham Hotspur, UCL runners-up the previous year, focused the spotlight on Red Bull Global’s chase for silverware. Meanwhile, reigning Champions Liverpool ended their run in the Round of 16 at the hands of Atletico Madrid. With a 25-point lead in the EPL, they are now focused on a domestic championship.
