Leipzig See Bundesliga Slip with Berlin Draw

RB Leipzig watched their slim hopes of winning the Bundesliga disappear with a 2-2 draw against Hertha Berlin on Tuesday afternoon at Red Bull Arena. A second half red card for Marcel Halstenberg and an untimely penalty conversion by Krzysztof Piatek gave Leipzig their fourth draw in five games.

Hertha Berlin were incredibly organized throughout the first half as they pushed Leipzig into mistakes in the midfield. Eventually the home team created chances but not before surrendering the first goal in the 9th minute. A Berlin corner fell to the foot of Marko Grujic who converted the effort to put the away team ahead.

Leipzig drew even in the 24th minute with a header from Lukas Klostermann. From there it looked as if more goals were on the horizon for the team in red as they pushed forward. The second goal didn’t come until the second half when Patrick Schick took a turning shot that goalkeeper Rune Jarstein bumbled into his own net.

Berlin were able to wrestle the momentum back in the 63rd minute when Halstenberg was handed his second yellow card. The event sent manager Julian Nagelsmann into a strategic challenge but over-compensated by replacing all of his strikers with defenders. Former Leipzig striker Matheus Cunha drew a late penalty and Piatek converted to give Berlin a share of the points.

Leipzig will remain in third place, losing out on the chance to surpass rivals Borussia Dortmund. It is the team’s fourth draw in five games, costing them a chance at winning the league. Leipzig will play again on Monday, on the road against Koln.
