Davis on Return to Training: “Waiting for this moment for a long time”

New York Red Bulls captain Sean Davis was smiling wide when discussing his team’s return to training following a lengthy suspension due to COVID-19. It was only yesterday that the governors of New York and New Jersey have allowed professional sports teams to begin operations again.

“We’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time,” said Davis. “Our area has been hit pretty hard but I think the club has had great patience. We’ve prepared for this. I think the staff has done a great job designing sessions, medical teams have done a great job of designing the protocol and, I think for all the guys, it was nice to be back in the same area.”

While the players can return to the training facility, it still isn’t business as usual. Players are working on individual training without much contact with other players. New York Red Bulls released a detailed list of guidelines that are to be followed while players are on the premises, and it is just the first step towards getting the team back on the field to playing a Major League Soccer game.

How that will happen remains to be seen. Word on how the league will be structuring play remains a mystery. There have been rumors of a localized tournament but no official word has come from any team or the league.

“It’s great to have the group back together,” said Davis. “There’s a real excitement in the air. No offense to the staff but I think my favorite part of the day was seeing the boys again. Going through the session on the field, again we have our own quadrant, but at the same time we’re doing the same drills. We’re suffering together and we’re working hard together.”
