RECAP: Werner Hat Trick Lifts Leipzig Back Into Third

Timo Werner put on a dazzling display on Sunday afternoon away against FSV Mainz 05 with a hat trick in a 5-0 performance. The win lifted RB Leipzig back into third place and ended a three-game streak of drawing opponents.

Leipzig started the game exactly the way they left off against Freiburg a week before. They held possession and created chances but still appeared to be missing the finishing touch. That changed in the 11th minute when Werner received a pass from Konrad Laimer and surgically placed a shot past the Mainz keeper. From there the floodgates opened and Leipzig were able to break down a defensive-minded opponent.

Yussuf Poulsen doubled the lead 13 minutes later with a dazzling header off a cross from Marcel Sabitzer and then the deliverer became the finisher when Sabitzer tripled the lead just before the halftime whistle. All signed pointed towards another dominant performance against the relegation candidate and the second half didn’t disappoint.

Just three minutes into the second half, Werner doubled his tally after an incisive pass from Kevin Kampl. By this point, Mainz let Leipzig dribble through them and the away team took advantage. Werner finished his scoring after a quick freekick in the 75th minute, lightly placing a ball past the Mainz keeper and securing his 24th goal of the campaign.

The Bundesliga title race may be over for Leipzig but they still have a strong chance at reaching second place. The win puts them just three points back of rivals Borussia Dortmund who have a tough fixture against Bayern Munich on Tuesday. Leipzig will return home against Hertha Berlin on Wednesday.
