Nagelsmann on Mainz: “8-0 Result Hasn’t Been Relevant”

Julian Nagelsmann and RB Leipzig are in a crucial phase of the season as they look to end their winless streak against Mainz on Sunday. The team has drawn their last three Bundesliga games and have fallen out of the hunt for the title and into rough waters as they look to retain a UEFA Champions League position.

“The 8-0 result hasn’t been relevant to our prepartions,” said Nagelsmann of the reverse fixture earlier in the season. “Mainz will be looking to make amends and we’ll try to put in a similarly good performance. However, it’s a different situation to the game earlier in the season, so I have no reason to factor in the 8-0.”

Mainz are struggling to remain in the Bundesliga. Currently in 15th place, they are four points from the relegation playoff game. Their motivation is clear and Naglesmann wants to make sure that Leipzig is similarly clear on what they are fighting for.

“We know that we need to put points on the board, and we will put points on the board again.”

Leipzig also has to deal with the distraction of constant transfer rumors surrounding several players. Timo Werner, Dayot Upamecano and several others have been linked with leaving the club. Nagelsmann’s task is to manage the morale of the club while also producing a winning product on the field.

Tomorrow’s game, which may seem like it should be an easy win, will represent a chance to right the wrongs of the past few fixtures. Mainz is beatable but Leipzig will need to be vigilant and return to their sharpshooter form from earlier in the year.
