New York Red Bulls II’s impressive unbeaten run in the USL eCup came to an end on Thursday night as they were defeated 3-1 by Rio Grande Valley FC.
Ben Mines was once again in control of NYRB II’s representative Chile as he squared off against Rio Grande Valley’s Kemba Kibato and their representative Brazil.
The first game was lost to a disconnection with Kibato up 2-1, which meant both players had to start over. Much like the first game Kibato wasted little time in grabbing the lead with a well worked corner that lead to a goal from Luimo Boas Santos.
Mines didn’t take long to find an equalizer as he played a nice cross with Alexis Sanchez into Fabián Orellana to tie the game in the 12th minute.
Kibato nearly scored again with Boas Santos minutes later but his shot hit the post and the rebound narrowly avoided Neymar for a tap in. The RGV midfielder would continue to put the pressure on and found his breakthrough in the 34th minute. A nice move was finished off by Laure Santiero to give RGV the lead back.
Mines tried to find an equalizer but Kibato’s stingy defense prevented any good chances for the rest of the first half.
It wouldn’t take long for Kibato to add a third in the second half. A nice team move was capped off with Santiero grabbing his second of the game after a finishing a low cross.
Mines continued to try and find a way back but Kibato’s defending prevented any chances from being created and the match ended 3-1 in RGV’s favor.
With their loss NYRB II will not be in first place overall going into week 4 of the USL eCup, but still have a chance to earn 600 points if they win their 3rd place game against Austin Bold FC. If NYRB II were to lose the match they would earn 300 points for finishing 4th.
The match will take place on Friday night at 7:30 PM and can be viewed on NYRB II’s Twitch channel.
