Leipzig Want Angeliño to Stay for Good

Spanish defender Angeliño has made a strong impression on RB Leipzig head coach Julian Nagelsmann and both he and the team hope to make the move permanent. Currently the 23-year-old has made five appearances for the club but played a major role in the team advancing to the quarterfinal of the UEFA Champions League.

“Since the first day Julian has given me a lot,” said Angeliño to Eurosport. “I’m very grateful to him, the staff and mostly the club. They gave me this chance in January and I wanted to go somewhere and play and enjoy football again and thanks to this club I did it so I am grateful.”

Angeliño is a product of the Deportivo la Coruña youth development system before signing as a professional with Manchester City in 2014. From there he has spent more time away from the English giants with multiple loan spells. He has played in MLS, Erdivisie and the lower leagues of Spain before moving to Germany. Still on loan, Leipzig are hoping to turn it into a permanent move.

Buying Angeliño won’t be cheap. The option-to-buy currently on his contract is worth close to $33 million. Leipzig is hoping that the number will decrease due to the current pandemic and ever changing landscape of world football but it remains to be seen.
