RECAP: Leipzig Draw Puts Bundesliga Title in Doubt

RB Leipzig and the Bundesliga returned to the field on Saturday but were left dissatisfied with a 1-1 draw against FC Freiburg at Red Bull Arena. The 34th minute goal from Manuel Gulde game the away team an early lead while Poulsen equalized in the 77th minute.

Julian Nagelsmann’s strikers certainly showed their rust in the first half. Despite several efforts early on, the Freiburg goalkeeper was barely ever put in danger of surrendering a goal. Efforts from Konrad Laimer, Timo Werner and Poulsen were either parried away or well wide of the target. Freiburg looked comfortable allowing Leipzig to retain the ball and limited them to low percentage chances.

It was in the 34th minute that the scoring opened. A rare corner for Freiburg rattled around in the box until bouncing off of Gulde and into the net. Leipzig’s response was to pressure again but still weren’t able to produce a dangerous chance.

The second half saw Adamola Lookman enter the game and produce Leipzig’s best chance to equalize to that point. A ball from Kevin Kampl saw the English winger in front of goal with a clear chance at net. Instead, the 22-year-old put the effort well wide of the net, squandering yet another opportunity. Werner also had a fantastic opportunity in the 72nd minute but Alexander Schwolow was more than up to the task, throwing a foot out to deflect the ball wide of the net.

It wasn’t until the 77th minute that Yussuf Poulsen found the back of the net with headed effort towards the far corner. A dynamic cross from Kampl created the opportunity and the Danish striker equalized the contest.

The draw deeply hurts Leipzig’s chances at winning the Bundesliga. The draw does bring them to within four points but a win by Bayern Munich would leave them seven points adrift. Bayer Leverkusen is also a concern as they are only four points back and could bump Leipzig out of a Champions League position.
