Editorial: Bundeliga is Back!

Let’s be honest, I’ve missed soccer, and you’ve missed soccer.

The Bundesliga is set to return on May 16th; now is the perfect time to pick a team to haphazardly support. Let me tell you why it should be RasenBallsport Leipzig.

Forget that it’s another Red Bull owned club for a minute; there is a lot of amazing talent on this team. NY’s own Tyler Adams; there’s Timo Werner, currently 2nd in the golden boot race at 21, after 25 rounds played.

French player, Christopher Nkunku, is new to the team, coming from Paris Saint-Germain. Nkunku has been a stellar addition to the team, with 12 assists so far in the season. The team also beaten out Tottenham Hotspurs in the UEFA Champions League; they’re now in the Round of 8 for the first time in club history.

There is a lot to like about the team. The players are all stellar and fit the high-tempo, “energy drink soccer” mentality New York Red Bull fans know well. They are currently third in the Bundesliga table, a few points behind Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund, but still in position to challenge for their first title.

The thing about this upcoming game, however, is while they play at home, stadiums all across Germany will be empty. Concerns over COVID-19 led to the German Bundisliga opening in empty stadiums to mitigate risk to players or fans.

Try them out, there’s a lot to like. You can catch them live on FS1 in the US at 9:30 AM EST.
