1st place RB Leipzig hosted 3rd place Borussia Monchengladbach to a 2-2 draw. M’gladbach played with 10 men after a second half red card.
M’gladbach started the game strong, scoring a goal in 24th minute by Alassane Plea. Leipzig were flustered and began playing sloppy allowing for M’gladbach to score a second in the 35th minute by Jonas Hoffman.
“We couldn’t get anything done at the start. We couldn’t find any solutions at the back and made some catastrophic errors. A half to forget.” Captain, Marcel Sabitzer remarks after the game. “After the break, we needed to show emotions and a good mentality. The early goal did us good.”
Leipzig did not let the first half get them down and showed their spirit and fight by scoring an early second half goal in the 50th minute by substitute Patrick Schick.
In a game that meant so much to both sides, a heated contest was expected, when Alessano Plea received a second yellow/red card for dissent after receiving his first yellow card. The probability for a Leipzig come back was high.
It wouldn’t be until the 89th minute, when Christopher Nkunku scored a screamer from outside the box. But a tie was as good as the Red Bulls would get.
After this tie, and Bayern Munich’s win. Leipzig drop to second closely followed by M’gladbach. Next weekends matchup RB Leipzig vs. Bayern Munich may be crucial for determining who will win the league.
Red Bull Salzburg
Red Bull Salzburg made a record signing on transfer deadline day. After selling Erling Haaland to Borussia Dortmund this January, an effort to bring in an attacker was made. Salzburg found their man in the young 19 year old Noah Okafor. Salzburg paid almost $13 million for the FC Basel winger. Okafor is under contract until 2024.
“Noah Okafor is a lightning-fast and technically strong player who incorporates on the whole a lot of what we need for our football.” Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund said. “We are sure that Noah will be able to realise his great potential with the kind of football that we play.”
Salzburg also won both of their friendlies in a double header Saturday February 1st. Their first game was a 6 – 0 win against FC Blau Weiß Linz. The second game was against Polish top-flight side Górnik Zabrze, which ended 3 – 0 in favor of Salzburg.
