Bermuda was the surprise team to make it into this summer’s Gold Cup, but more surprising, into League A of CONCACAF Nations League. But a tough Panama side brought Bermuda back down to earth, with Los Canaleros defeating Bermuda 4-1 in Hamilton, Bermuda on Thursday night.
Panama opened the scoring in the 31st and Bermuda was able to equalize right before half, but Panama would take the lead again less than a minute later and never look back. Goals for Panama were scored by Gabriel Torres (31st & 66th), Rolando Blackburn (45th) and Adalberto Carrasquilla (90th). Bermuda’s equalizer in the 45th was an own goal by Harold Cummings.
New York Red Bulls defender Michael Murillo started and played all 90 minutes for Panama. This is Murillo’s 36th cap for Panama since debuting in 2016. However, this only ranks him 13th in appearances on the team’s active (and aging) roster.
The two teams will square off again in Panama City on Sunday. If Panama defeat Bermuda once more, they will be halfway to the Nations League semifinals in June 2020. Unfortunately, the other half of the matches will be against champion favorite, Mexico on October 15th and November 15th.
