Velas one goal, two assist performance, powers LAFC past Red Bulls in LA

Despite a valiant effort, the New York Red Bulls joined a legion of teams to fall at Banc of California Stadium to Los Angeles FC.

Carlos Vela was held at bay in the run of play against the Red Bulls, but his set piece delivery helped tilt the balance of the match towards LAFC. Vela provided two free kick assists, and added a goal from the penalty spot to give LAFC a 4-2 win.

The Red Bulls did well offensively, but failed to finish their chances. Daniel Royer, Brian White, and Tim Parker all created opportunities to tally, but a combination of strong defensive efforts from LAFC and poor finishing from the Red Bulls kept the match out of reach.

Jordan Harvey put the home side on top in the 23rd minute. Following a foul on Adama Diomande, LAFC set up a free kick on the right side of the field. The service in from Carlos Vela eluded the Red Bulls backline, and found the head of Jordan Harvey. Harvey nodded his powerful header into the net past Luis Robles.

LAFC followed up the opening goal with a second goal two minutes later. Kemar Lawrence was caught flat footed on a pass out wide to Steven Beitashour. Beitashour send a first time cross low into the box. Latif Blessing met the cross late, sliding, and sending the ball into the back of the net.

Cristian Casseres Jr. answered back in the 42nd minute. Sean Davis and Kaku closed down Latif Blessing yards from the LAFC box. Blessing coughed up the ball to Kaku, and the midfielder quickly played the ball to Casseres. Casseres turned and struck a dipping effort that eluded the diving Tyler Miller.

The Red Bulls mimicked LAFC’s efforts from earlier in the half, and scored their second goal in the 45th minute. Following a corner, with a potential handball on Latif Blessing, Casseres started a counter attack through the middle of the field. Casseres sent the ball wide to Daniel Royer on the left side of the field. Royer delivered a low cross to Brian White. White’s effort pinged off the post, hit the back of Tyler Miller, then back into the goal. It was ruled an own goal by Miller.

LAFC appeared to take the lead in the 50th minute. Mark Anthony Kayes deflected shot beat Luis Robles, but during the lead up to the goal, Kaye fouled Sean Davis off the ball. Referee Drew Fisher used VAR to overturn the goal.

LAFC did eventually retake the lead in the 61st minute from the penalty spot. Eduard Atuesta earned the penalty kick, drawing a foul in the box from Rece Buckmaster. Carlos Vela took the penalty kick, and made Luis Robles guess the wrong way, scoring his 23rd goal of the season. Then, LAFC slammed the door shut in the 72nd minute. Once again, a set piece just outside of the box caught the Red Bulls. Carlos Vela chipped in a cross with his left foot. Eddie Segura beat Tim Parker to the ball, and placed a header into the net.

The Red Bulls fall to 11-10-4 on the season, sliding back into 5th place following this weekend’s MLS slate. Next up, the Red Bulls return home to take on Bruce Arena and the New England Revolution on August, 11th.
