Haiti looks to continue their impressive run in the 2019 Gold Cup when they take on Canada on Saturday.
After winning their first two matches against Bermuda and Nicaragua, Haiti had to win against Costa Rica to win the group. Despite trailing 1-0 at halftime, Haiti managed to storm back in the second half with a penalty from Duckens Nazon and a late winner Djimy-Bend Alexis to win the match and group B.
Haiti’s up tempo style has been a key to their success and Derrick Etienne Jr. had been in the middle of all it. The winger made an impact after coming on as a sub in the first game, being involved in the build up on both goals.
In the last two group stage games he started in both and his involvement has lead to 2 of the 4 goals Haiti has scored including the game winner against Costa Rica.
They will be up against Group A runner-up Canada who thrashed both Martinique and Cuba for their two wins in the group. They were defeated by Mexico 3-1 for their only loss in the group stage.
Two of the standouts for Canada have been forwards Jonathan David who has 5 goals and 2 assists and Lucas Cavallini who has 4 goals. Although most of their goals came against two less talented teams the two did combine for Canada’s only goal against Mexico.
In the 6 meetings between these two teams Haiti has never won, they have two draws and 4 losses against Canada.
Before their win against Costa Rica on Tuesday, Haiti had never won against Los Ticos in the previous 8 matches against them. It’s possible with the way Haiti have been playing that the same happens on Saturday.
