The New York Red Bulls U-23 began their season in the rebranded USL League Two with a big home win, 6-0 over the visiting Evergreen FC.
The home side wasted no time getting on the board. Within two minutes after kick-off, Allen Gavilanes played a through ball to Jonathan Filipe. Filipe split the backline comfortably, chipped the goalkeeper, and gave the home side the lead.
After the goal, the away side tried to catch the U-23’s on the counter and nearly tied the score on two separate occasions. NYRB u23’s Sam Ilin strong play kept the u23s in the lead.
NYRB u23 doubled their lead in the 15th minute. Captain Brian Saramago squaring the ball across the box. Filipe just missed the ball for his second the game. Luckily, Gavilanes was there for the easy tap-in.
Evergreen was awarded a penalty kick in the first half, giving them an opportunity to cut the lead in half. Their attempt went over the crossbar. Tough blow to the Virginia side.
Just as the first half was wrapping up, NYRB u23’s John Murphy headed the ball into an empty net after the ball bounced around the six-yard box with the U-23 side continuing to give the EFC backline headaches. NYRB u23 headed into halftime up three.
At the hour mark with some quick build-up play from the back, Filipe was played in alone on goal and hit a low ball through the keeper’s leg. It was NYRB u23’s fourth and a brace for Filipe.
At this point in the second-half, the NYRB u23 Head Coach Simon Nee made six substitutions to give his hungry reserve players a run at the away side.
Those players wanted a piece of the fun as well, scoring a fifth goal. After some great one touch football down on the left flank, the ball was crossed in, where Marin settled it nicely with his first touch and hit a low shot to the far post with his second.
In 73rd minute, Marin received a through ball on goal. With the goalkeeper rushing towards him, Marin went around the keeper and played a pass to an unmarked Barry Sharifi to score on an open net and give his side a half-dozen lead on Evergreen FC.
Man of the Match
The entire Red Bulls U-23 side completely ran over the visitors in all aspects of the game with every player doing their part for a great start to the season. So it’s hard to give one player this award.
However, Jonathan Filipe bagged an important brace on the night to help give his side a quick lead and wrap up the game early on in the second half. He caused constant havoc to the Evergreen backline that offered no solution on how to stop the bleeding.
New York play Reading United AC at the Red Bulls Training Facility on Wednesday, May 22 at 7 PM EST.
