The New York Red Bulls II won their second match of the season, defeating Memphis 901 FC in back and forth battle. The win also marked John Wolyniec’s 70th win as NYRBII head coach.
Jared Stroud, Tom Barlow, and Derrick Etienne Jr. provided the scoring on the night, as the NYRBII defense struggled against the three pronged 901 attack. Etienne’s goal proved the match winner. NYRBII won the match 3-2.
901 opened the scoring in the 11th minute. A low cross skipped through the box, finding Duane Muckette alone on the left side of the box. Muckette sent the ball centrally to Adam Najem. The former Red Bull Academy player tapped in the goal.
Najem continues his history of torching NYRBII. Despite starting strong, NYRBII ceded possession for a stretch preceding the goal. 901 ran the home side around, challenging their width and earning purchase in the attack.
NYRBII brought the match level in the 18th minute. Ben Mines sent a looping cross into the box. The cross found Jared Stroud at the back post. Stroud blasted the volley into the near side of the goal. Leading up to the goal, 901 attempted to sit back and allow NYRBII time the attacking half. The young Bulls negated the bunked through quick, short passing.
Tom Barlow pushed NYRBII in front just before in first half stoppage time. Stroud got loose down the left wing, sending in a cross to the six yard box. Brian White challenged for the cross, knocking the ball away from 901 goalkeeper Jeff Caldwell. Barlow cleaned up the loose ball into an open net.
In the second half, Derrick Etienne Jr. added to the scoring. A furious attack saw Brian White hit a shot off the post in the 56th minute. Jared Stroud recovered the ball and sent a cross deep into the box. The ball fell to Etienne who used tricky footwork to open space and take a shot, finding the back of the net.
901 pulled a goal back in the 61st minute. Following a foul at the top of the box on Muckette by Jordan Scarlett, Marc Burch stepped up to take the free kick. Burch sent a curling effort at goal. Despite Evan Louro getting a hand on it, the pace of the shot carried the ball into the net.
Next up, NYRBII travels to Alabama to take on the Birmingham Legion FC on April, 9th.
