Brian White’s second half equalizer saved a point for New York Red Bulls II in a 1-1 draw against Nashville SC on Sunday afternoon at MSU Soccer Park. An incredibly physical game saw a over 30 fouls between both teams and a frustrating result despite strong possession numbers and numerous chances.
The first half saw Nashville SC sit back and allow New York to control the game. They looked for counters and, at times, flirted with danger as the Red Bulls found a few dangerous corner opportunities. Nothing of substance came from up as the final product lacked with White as the lead striker and multi-goal scorer Tom Barlow being left on the bench.
The visitors struck first in the 21st minute when defender Sean Nealis tried to play the ball back to goalkeeper Evan Louro but instead found Nashville striker Daniel Rios. The player pulled away from Louro who was caught in-between the play for the game’s opening goal. The strike took the life out of the game for New York who looked to rebound but found it difficult.
Red Bulls rebounded in the second half tying the game in the 55th minute when Marcus Epps found White in front of goal for an easy header. The team continued to push forward, creating opportunities but missing the mark on numerous occasions. The 83rd minute proved to be their best chance at taking the lead when a set piece led to a shot that rattled the post and spilled in front of an empty net but couldn’t be put away.
Next for New York Red Bulls II will be newcomers Memphis 901 FC visiting MSU Soccer Park on Friday. With positives to take away from the game, head coach John Wolyniec will look to turn one point into three in five days.
