New York Red Bulls II have announced the signing of a majority of their 2019 player pool in one announcement just one day ahead of their opening game against Swope Park Rangers. Players signed include Roy Boateng, Sean McSherry, Kyle Zajec, Sebastian Elney and Preston Kilwien. The rest of the team can be expected to fill out from the MLS reserves.
Boateng is one that will be crucial to watch in 2019 as the team looks to reshape their defense. The UC Davis player started 81 total matches for the school and was a two-time Big West Defensive Player of the Year. He was selected 16th overall in the MLS SuperDraft and may be the partner for Jordan Scarlett this season.
Academy standout Kyle Zajec returns to Red Bulls II after making his debut with the team in 2015 as an academy player. Since then Zajec has made 62 appearances for Georgetown and scored four goals with nine assists. The last three seasons haven’t seen him stray too far from home, having played the last three campaigns with the Red Bulls U23 team of USL League Two.
Lastly is Philadelphia Union academy player Sebastian Elney. The 22-year-old scored 17 goals while playing for Maryland University and was a Big Ten All-Tournament Team player in 2017. He also has experience with the US U17 and U18 national team, competing in Concacaf qualification.
The new signees will join a returning cast of players which include Evan Louro, Chris Lima, Jared Stroud and Tom Barlow to name a few. Adding in academy and MLS loans to the mix and Red Bulls II is set to begin the 2019 season with John Wolyniec at the helm.
