New York Red Bulls II of the USL Championship have announced the signing of 22-year-old defender Rece Buckmaster. The four-year letterman from Indiana University featured prominently for the MLS team during preseason and saw starts against teams such as Phoenix Rising.
“Rece impressed us at the MLS Combine and quickly became a player that we wanted to have at our club,” said head coach John Wolyniec. “We are excited to be able to draft him and he has proven us right with his individual defending and tactical adaptibility. The staff believes he can contribute at the MLS level sooner rather than later.”
The move adds more help to the defense which also includes Jordan Scarlett and Allen Yanes for certain. Other names floated around but none made public as of press time.
Buckmaster was the 32nd overall pick in the 2019 MLS Draft and recorded five goals and 12 assists in his collegiate career at Indiana. Buckmaster earned Second-Team All-Big Ten in 2018 and led Indiana to consecutive appearances in the National Championship.
New York has it’s first game in the 2019 USL Championship season this coming Saturday at MSU Soccer Park against Swope Park Rangers. The team has high expectations having advanced to the Eastern Conference final or beyond in each of the last three seasons.
