For their first preseason scrimmage of 2019, the New York Red Bulls took on first division Swedish side IF Elfsborg.
The Red Bulls starting lineup v IF Elfsborg appeared to be a 4-2-3-1. Bradley Wright Phillips, Jared Stroud, Kaku, Alex Muyl composed the front lines. Chris Lema and Jean Cristophe Koffi presumably made up the double pivot in midfield. 2019 MLS SuperDraft pick, Janos Loebe, played his first minutes as a converted left back. In the center of defense was Sean Nealis, another 2019 MLS SuperDraft pick out of Hostra, alongside Tim Parker. Kyle Duncan played his first minutes back since his ACL tear last season against Orlando City SC. Ryan Meara got the start in goal.
The Red Bulls made subs in the 31st minute. Rece Buckmaster, Marcus Epps, Connor Lade, Ben Mines, Brian White, Allen Yanes entered. Coming out were Kaku, Wright-Phillips, Muyl, Duncan, Loebe, Parker.
In the 46th minute, Meara, Stroud, Koffi, Nealis came off for Sean Davis, Evan Louro, and Jordan Scarlett. Omir Fernandez also came on, the attacker is rumored to be the next New York Red Bulls signing despite an official announcement from the club.
IF took the lead during this stretch from the penalty spot.
In the 61st, Lema, Mines, Buckmaster, Epps, Lade and White came off for Michael Amir-Murillo, Tom Barlow, Derrick Etienne Jr., Marc Rzatkowski, Daniel Royer, and John Tolkin. Tolkin is another Red Bulls Academy player who has featured with the US Youth National Team.
The final group to enter the match provided both Red Bull goals. Daniel Royer scored twice in the final period to win the scrimmage for the Red Bulls. His second goal came from a late penalty kick.
As always, results in preseason are less important than getting the team back up to speed and avoid injuries. In both cases, the match was a success.
The Red Bulls just capped off their first week of training in Bradenton, FL where they will play two more scrimmages against the Philadelphia Union and Orlando City SC. Before heading to Tucson, AZ to partake in the Mobil Mini Sun Cup, the Red Bulls will return home for a week.
