After much speculation following a breakout sophomore year, midfielder Omir Fernandez has signed a Homegrown deal with the New York Red Bulls.
In 2018, Fernandez earned the ACC Offensive Player of the Year award while receiving a consensus First Team All-America honor. He scored 12 goals and six assists in his sophomore year, adding onto an impressive six goals and five assists from his freshman year. TopDrawerSoccer.com rated Fernandez as the 64th best player nationally ahead of his sophomore season. But by the end of the regular season, he was ranked 5th amongst all collegiate players.
On behalf of everyone at the organization, I’d like to welcome Omir to the First Team,” said Red Bulls Sporting Director Denis Hamlett. “Omir is a talented young player that has proven he can excel with the academy, in the college game, and with U.S. Youth National Teams. He has earned this opportunity and we look forward to his continued growth as a professional. This is a proud moment for Omir, his family, and Red Bulls Academy.”
Before heading to Wake Forest, Fernandez notched back-to-back twenty goal seasons with the Red Bulls Academy. His impressive play earned him a game with New York Red Bulls II back in 2016.
“We have followed Omir closely and are pleased to add him to the First Team,” said Red Bulls Head Coach Chris Armas. “He is a talented player and also a humble person with high character. He understands our style of play and also attacks with creativity and intelligence.”
As a natural left-sided midfielder, Fernandez will likely see more time with the USL team in 2019. S
