The New York Red Bulls will be starting their preseason in Tuscon, taking part in the 2019 Mobile Mini Sun Cup. The games will consists of eight teams, one being the host team Phoenix Rising FC of the USL Championship and the rest are MLS clubs.
The Red Bulls will join FC Dallas, Houston Dynamo, Minnesota United, Portland Timbers, Real Salt Lake, Seattle Sounders, Sporting KC and Phoenix Rising. The event will run from February 6th to the 23rd, featuring two matches at Phoenix Rising Soccer Complex. The other matches in Tuscon will take place at Kino Sports Complex North Stadium.
This isn’t the first time the Red Bulls have traveled to Arizona for preseason games. Last year they took part in the same event, playing Phoenix as well as several other teams. The competition consisted of a mix of USL and MLS talent considering the first team was participating in the Concacaf Champions League. The same will occur this time as the games fall towards the tail end of the Spring training trip.
Last year the team split their preseason preparations with a trip to Florida as well. Whether or not the same thing will happen here, or any other friendlies will take place remains to be seen. New York has a bit of a reprieve with some distance between their first CCL game and the regular season but based on past seasons, this may still be a time to see many of the academy and draft players showing what they have ahead of the competitive games.
