The USL Championship announced their season schedule, a 33-game slate with an expanded playoff format.
Ten teams now make the playoffs. Seeds seven thru ten participate in a wildcard game to win the last two spots in each conference. While it may seemingly make playoff qualification easier for NYRBII, league expansion and a balanced schedule will have teams playing harder through portions of the season in order to finish above the line.
The New York Red Bulls II begin their season with three straight home games, welcoming 2016 USL Cup Final opponents Swope Park Rangers to kick off the year on March 9th. From there Nashville SC and Memphis 901 FC make trips to MSU Soccer Park to round out March.
New potential rivals Hartford Athletic will visit NYRBII on April 17th. The new Connecticut club is now the closest team and will join Bethlehem Steel FC and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds to create new northeast competitions.
Other notes from the schedule include a first trip to Tampa Bay to play the Rowdies in May and an Eastern Conference Championship rematch against Louisville City FC on June 15th. The overall season will end on October 20th and the wildcard games will be completed three days later on October 23rd. USL Cup Final will happen at some point between November 14th thru the 18th.
NYRBII also play nine home matches during the school year at MSU. The added games during the school year could help boost attendance and team visibility in 2019.
