Former RB Leipzig manager Ralph Hasenhuttl has taken over for the struggling Southampton of the English Premier League. Currently in the relegation zone, Southampton fired manager Mark Hughes on Monday and has gone to the successful Bundesliga coach to pull them out of the bottom of the table.
Former RB Leipzig Coach Takes Reigns at Southampton
“As soon as we met, Ralph’s enthusiasm for football was contagious,” said Southampton chairman Ralph Krueger. “His hunger to take on a new and challenging job in the Premier League was evident. Ralph’s ability to teach the game and to develop talent is evident in his past and is the centerpiece of why he is the perfect choice.”
Hasenhuttl has significant experience in the Bundesliga first with Ingolsadt from 2013 to 2016 and then with RB Leipzig until last season. In two season with the dynamic East German team, he finished in second and sixth place respectively. In his first year with the team, he qualified for the UEFA Champions League and took the thin roster deep into the Europa League in the last campaign.
The appointment takes Hasenhuttl away from German for the first time in his career and throws him into the hyper critical world of English football. There is an understanding that the Austrian coach didn’t build this roster but he will have an impending transfer window to do what is necessary to bolster the team and make a run at keeping the team in the top flight of England.
