New York Red Bulls II stifle Pittsburgh Riverhounds, 2-1

Montclair, NJ – Wth their ticket for a spot for the USL Cup Playoffs already punched, the New York Red Bulls II earned a hard-fought 2-1 victory In front of 1,592 which was the largest crowd for a regular season match at MSU Soccer Park at MSU Soccer Park.

It was the final home match for New York Red Bulls II as coach John Wolyniec decided to rest some of the starters for this match. The local fans came out in force to cheer on the home side on a chilly Mid-October evening. The team rolls into the USL Cup Playoffs with a three-match winning streak.

New York’s frenetic pace had the Riverhounds on their heels early, with some nice chances that were a touch away from being in the back of the net. The Red Bulls were able to break through in the 30th minute as Tom Barlow pounced on a defensive mistake to score his eighth goal of the season.

New York continued that frenetic pace as the second half got underway, creating key chances along the way, and frustrating the Riverhounds attackers until the 53rd minute, Christiano Francois got to a loose ball in the box, but was denied at the last minute by Kevin Politz as he cleared the ball off the line, negating yet another key chance for Pittsburgh.

However, in the 70th minute a bad tackle resulted in a penalty for the visitors, but Scott Levene denies Riverhound captain Kenardo Forbes bid for an equalizer for the visitors.

With Pittsburgh pressing for a last minute equalizer, it would Jared Stroud pouncing on a loose ball on a break and slamming it into the net to double the advantage.
