(CARY, NC) With three games left in the regular season, New York Red Bulls II finally get a win on the road at Sahlen’s Stadium at WakeMed Soccer Park.

Despite going a man down in the first half, NYRBII scratched and clawed their way to their first road victory of the season. Evan Louro’s standout performance led the way for an opportunistic NYRBII side to win 2-1 over North Carolina FC.

NYRBII finally win on the road, beat North Carolina FC

The match got off to a wild start with some entertaining, wide-open, end-to-end action. After some quality chances that went begging by both sides, Anatole Abang got New York on the board first, thanks in part to leaping over a defender heading in the ball at close-range off a corner kick, and settling in the back of the net to give the visitors the lead in the 24th minute.

However, Abang found his night cut short. He received a red card for kicking Aaron Guillen late in the first half after Guillen received a yellow card for hitting Abang. NYRBII were once again forced to play a man down for the second consecutive week.

In the second half, NCFC found an equalizer. Midfielder Kyle Bekker pounced on a loose ball off a rebound, scoring the equalizer in the 52nd minute. NCFC kept up the pressure in the second half, but Evan Louro found a way to deny the home side each time.

NYRBII found chances tougher to come by in the second half, but their high press paid dividends once again. An NCFC error led to a bad turnover in front of the net. Andrew Tinari pounced on the loose ball, and fired a shot. Tambakis saved the initial effort, but spilled the ball into the path of Tom Barlow. Barlow’s rebound was finished easily in the 79th minute, giving the visitors the lead they desperately needed.

NYRBII’s defense stood tall, shutting down NCFC for the remainder of the match. Hassan Ndam led the defense throughout the nervy final moments.

Three Things:

  1. With two games remaining in the regular season, mistakes can loom large and as a result, cost you points that you desperately need to clinch a spot for the playoffs. Once again, New York exhibited it’s discipline problem as Abang received a red card in the first half.
  2. North Carolina FC had some key chances early and often, but thanks to New York Red Bulls II Evan Louro answered the challenge each team to keep the home side scoreless as the first half came to a close. He made eight overall.
  3. For a side that was desperately looking for a win on the road, they finally got one being a man down, and a gift by the North Carolina FC defense. The win puts the Red Bulls in a tie for 7th place with two games left to play in the USL regular season.

Man of the Match:

Evan Louro: Louro made some huge saves throughout the match, keeping the hosts at bay despite waves of attacks in the second half.
