On Tuesday afternoon, the Haitian national team announced their roster for their CONCACAF Nations League Qualifier against St. Lucia on October 13th. New York Red Bulls striker Derrick Etienne Jr was included in the list.
GlobeBull: Etienne Summoned to Face St. Lucia for Haiti CONCACAF Nations League Qualifier
Etienne has appeared in 33 matches for the Red Bulls in all competitions this season, scoring four goals. He has been taking on the role of a super sub as the backup to Bradley Wright-Phillips, or playing alongside BWP when the Red Bulls want two strikers going forward, replacing one of the wingers.
Etienne has seven caps for Haiti since joining the senior side in 2016. He has two goals for Les Grenadiers during the time. The most recent was in their last Nations League qualifying match against Sint Maarten where he scored the 10th goal in a 13-0 romp at Port-au-Prince. Haiti is sitting at the top of the standings due to the scoreline of the last match, but six teams won by more than five goals in Matchday 1, so it was important for them to jump out to such a large lead.
Haiti travels to St. Lucia on October 13th for their sole match of the October window. During Matchday 2, all Pot A teams (where Haiti is) will play all Pot C teams. On paper, St. Lucia should be a stronger opponent than Sint Maarten, but if Haiti come out flying again, they will be on their way to securing a spot in League A and book their ticket to the 2019 CONCACAF Gold Cup next summer.
