Nearly six years since the murder of Red Bulls youth soccer coach, Michael Jones, his killer, Orlando Orea, was finally captured in Puebla, Mexico.
Michael Jones’ killer captured in Mexico
The murder took place at 14th Street Union Square on October 7th, 2012 in the early morning hours. Orea cut off Jones’ ear and stabbed him multiple times in the chest and neck. Police believe the murder was a case of a mistaken identity stemming from a bar fight. Orea fled to Mexico two days after the killing from JFK Airport just 15 hours before he was placed on a no-fly list.
Orlando Orea was captured after he shot three Mexican police officers, subsequently killing two. The day prior, two federal agents went to Orea’s place of residence to serve him with an arrest warrant prompting his extradition to the United States. Orea opened fire and fled spurring a manhunt.
Michael Jones was from Liverpool, England and spent 5 seasons in the metropolitan area as a Red Bulls youth coach. “Jonesy” as he was called last coached Armonk United in Westchester County, NY.
The club has chosen not to comment on Orea’s capture.
