MLS Power Rankings 2018 – Week 25

This Shield race is beginning to feel a lot like the Premier League.  Three teams in contention and they all have a good run-of-form the last few weeks. Atlanta United FC (4-0-2 in its last 6) doesn’t stop scoring, the New York Red Bulls (5-1-1 in last 7) are flipping the narrative on their history, having the ability to win/draw ugly and New York City FC are a tough side as well (5 wins in last 8 matches).

MLS Power Rankings 2018 – Week 25

In the West, FC Dallas is within striking distance now even though they have had a mixed form lately. Sporting KC and LAFC have grabbed all points in their last two.

The Red Bulls have gone from 4th to 2nd since the last edition of this column in W19. They have fought hard for their four points in their last two away matches and finish off their “road trip” with NYCFC tomorrow night. The matchup has some heavy Shield implications.

Here is how the league rounds out after 25 weeks (change from Week 24 in parentheses):

  1. Atlanta United (no change)
  2. RBNY (no change)
  3. Sporting KC (+2)
  4. FC Dallas (+2)
  5. NYCFC (-2)
  6. LAFC (+2)
  7. Seattle Sounders (+2)
  8. Portland Timbers (-4)
  9. Columbus Crew (-2)
  10. Philly Union (+2)
  11. DC United (+4)

Note: This will be the 14th meeting in all comps against NYCFC. RBNY own the series 8-4-1, scoring 30 times to NYCFC’s 12, however RBNY has not gotten a point at Yankee Stadium since the infamous 7-0 match in May 2016.
