Munas Dabbur continues to prove he is the top scorer in Austria by adding two more to his tally in a 3-0 win over Shkendija in the first leg of the UEFA Champions League third round qualifier. Goals in the 15th and 45th minute were all the team needed but a third was added in the second half to perhaps make Salzburg’s advancement a bit more comfortable.
RB Salzburg: Dabbur Shines with Two in UCL Qualifier
“I think it was a special evening tonight,” said manager Marco Rose following the win. “We did a lot of things right. We won and put ourselves in a good position for the second leg. While we had lots of chances ourselves, we let Shkendija have a few top chances. We have to avoid that in Macedonia.”
Dabbur’s first goal came in the 16th minute when he converted a penalty kick that he earned. Earlier in the game Shkendija’s keeper made a big save to keep the game even but the Israeli striker’s persistence paid off with the penalty opportunity. He doubled the lead right before the halftime whistle by deflecting a Zlatko Junuzovic freekick into the net.
The second half was notable for a power outage in the 83rd minute but not before Diadie Samassekou scored to make the lead stand at 3-0. The lightning storm which delayed the game only lasted 10 minutes and the team saw no change in the game as they cruised to victory.
Salzburg will travel to Macedonia on Tuesday for the second leg of the competition but have to feel confident after this performance. A weekend league game against FK Austria Wien may end up being a distraction but the lead gathered in tonights game may be more than enough to see them through to the Playoffs.
