Though Bradley Wright-Phillips never found quite the same level of success in England as his legendary father Ian Wright or his brother Shaun, there is no denying that BWP has found tremendous success in with the New York Red Bulls.
#AskRBNN – Which of the 1st 100 Bradley Wright-Phillips goals is your favorite?
Whether it’s his 27-goal record-tying 2014 campaign, his record-setting 27-minute hat-trick against Toronto FC in 2016, his game-winning goal against FC Cincinnati in the 2017 US Open Cup Semi-Finals, or his 100th goal against DC United, there is no shortage of signature moments that have made BWP one of the greatest players in RBNY history.
Now, having scored his 100th goal and getting his jersey immortalized by the Red Bulls, it’s time to take a quick look back at what have been some of BWP’s most impressive moments. So we polled the RBNN writers to get their thoughts:
What is your favorite BWP goal or moment in MLS?
Kyle Debelak – His bicycle kick vs NYCFC at Yankee Stadium. It was the cherry on top of an amazing first half, which only became more amazing as we won 7-0.
Liam Pettit – 2017 vs TFC his bicycle kick while falling away was incredible. The way he adjusted his body to the redirection before it was pretty special.
Eric Friedlander – This one vs New England. Everything from the cut to beat the man and then the weak foot finish and what it meant in the game just perfect.
John Perdicaro – Mine has to be the second goal from July 24th 2016 vs Blue team, Just the way he makes the keeper try run out to grab the ball only to feint away and score on a net filled with two NYCFC defenders. It was perfect.
Joseph Steen – His goal against SKC in 2014 to tie the scoring record. Hounded Aurelien Collin on what was a simple long ball, won it and then made the finish look so easy. The goal really summed up what a workhorse he is at his position.
Paul Vernick – His 3rd goal vs Seattle Sounders on 9/20. I had won the tickets and it was my first game since 2007. He scored the hat trick against Seattle in just 56 mins. Got me and my family to buy season tickets from watching this game. Also the first ‘NY is Red’ Tifo I had ever seen.
Steve Toto – Outside foot one-timer against Minnesota this year. I jumped off my couch when I saw it.
Joe G. – Cut back finish on TFC in 2016 at home. He abuses defenders with that move regularly, but this is the best example of how effective a move it is.
Tzvi M. – There are so many great goals to choose from against NYC FC in particular. But the one that always stands out to me is the second one he scored in July 2016 where he breaks out of the tackle in the box, lures Josh Saunders into a feint and cleanly puts it away like it’s no big deal. Cold. Blooded. Finish.
Final Vote: Of the nine writers polled, only two goals managed to garner more than a single vote – the second goal against NYC FC at Red Bull Arena on July 24, 2016 (which you can view here), and the bicycle kick in May 2017 against Toronto FC (view it here). But none stood head and shoulders above the other.
I suppose the only conclusion to draw from this virtual deadlock is that BWP has scored so many memorable goals that it’s impossible to pick just one of them out of a crowd. Oh well, cest la vie! Here’s to another hundred and many, many more memorable moments from No. 99, Bradley Wright-Phillips.
What’s your favorite of BWP’s 100 league goals? Let us know.
