The 2018-19 Austrian Bundesliga kicks off for Red Bull Salzburg tomorrow with the hopes of extending their season title streak to six years in a row. The dominant side that also blazed a trail through the Europa League last season has to face one of the three teams that handed them a loss last season to start the campaign, LASK Linz.
Preview: Salzburg Look for Six Straight Titles as Bundesliga Season Opens
Last season Salzburg lit up the Austrian Bundesliga with a record-setting 83 points. The team only dropped three games and won 25 with a goal differential of +52. Much of the credit has to go to now second year manager Marco Rose. Since joining the club, Rose has put forward the type of offensive football that is not only entertaining for fans in Salzburg, but also drawing attention around the world the way teams like Ajax did decades before.
Leading the attack is 2017-18 Golden Boot winner Moanes Dabour. The Isreali international lit up the scoresheet with 22 in the season and additional seven goals in European and cup play. He’s the top of a four-four-two formation that creates chaos in opposing defenses and suffocates score lines before teams have a chance to react.
Additional news is that the team has extended the contract of full-back Andreas Ulmer, who was named team captain at the start of the year. Ulmer has been with the club since 2009 and may end up ending his career in Salzburg with a deal that runs thru to the 2020 season. He has made over 360 appearances for the club and has been a part of eight championship teams.
