Columbus Crew SC and the New York Red Bulls play on Saturday July 28th at 7 pm EST at Red Bull Arena. This Saturday night’s game versus the Crew is the Red Bulls’s second game in the past week. While this could seem unsettling to some, the team has continued to gather points in each of the last three games. The past game for RBNY was marked by Bradley Wright-Phillips’s 2nd minute goal. This goal, the only of the night, was BWP’s 100th MLS regular season goal.
Preview: Columbus Crew come to Red Bull Arena
This game is the second iteration of the year between the Crew and the Red Bulls. The previous meeting between these teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Mapfre Stadium in Columbus. The first goal of the game was scored by new Crew player, Gyasi Zardes. While the Red Bulls answered in the second half with a goal by Alex Muyl.
The Crew have played two more games than the Red Bulls, and have a point total of 33 points. Lately the team has lost two of their last three games, with their win versus Orlando City SC coming last week. The Crew are looking to collect more points as the summer is beginning to wind down.
The hosts of this game, the Red Bulls, have an opportunity to rise to the top of the standings with a win, and losses by Atlanta and NYCFC. Having won five of their last six games, the team has achieved results in Harrison and away. Facing the Crew, Armas is in his fourth game as head coach. He and the squad will want to continue the hot stretch that has occurred since the loss in the Bronx.
Players to Watch
Alejandro ‘Kaku’ Romero Gamarra
Known around the RBNY world as ‘Kaku’, Gamarra has continued to shine in his first year playing for the Red Bulls. After a confusing period, he was signed in February as a young DP. Kaku has made his mark around the league, with a league leading 13 assists and three goals. Recently, he has provided an assist in each of the last three games. Considering the team has won each of the previous three games, this a testament to his ball moving skills.
Starting in the last six games, the team’s number 10 has accumulated four assists in that period. Looking towards this Saturday’s game, Kaku will try to continue his three game stretch of assists and hopefully it is in addition to a team win.
Gyasi Zardes has shined since his trade from LA Galaxy to Columbus. Leading the Crew with 13 goals, Zardes scored twice in Columbus’s last game. Both of the goals kept the Crew in a position to win, but neither were the game winner. He was also the goal scorer for the Crew in the last game between the two sides and will want to continue his climb up the Golden Boot race standings. Zardes will be the attacker to watch if Columbus wants to make any attacking plays this coming Saturday.
