BWP’s 100th hands D.C. first loss at Audi Stadium

Bradley Wright-Phillips scored his 100th goal and the Red Bulls won their first match at Audi Stadium.

A day after the fifth anniversary of signing Wright-Phillips, D.C. United witnessed an historic moment early in the match. Wright-Phillips reached 100 goals faster than any other player in MLS history, and it is another milestone in a great career. It proved to be the game winner as the Red Bulls defeated D.C. 1-0.

The match, scheduled to start at 8pm, had a delayed start due to severe weather. A storm blowing through the D.C. area brought heavy rains and lightning. The delay lasted until 9:27.

The Red Bulls came flying out of the gates, opening the scoring in the 2nd minute. Alejandro “Kaku” Romero Gamarra recognized Wright-Phillips making a run behind the D.C. defense. “Kaku” played a perfect ball to Wright-Phillips. The striker controlled the ball in the box, cut back, and then fired a shot near post that beat David Ousted. The goal was Wright-Phillips 100th goal in league play.

D.C. appeared to have equalized in the 25th minute. Paul Arriola snuck behind Kemar Lawrence and finished past Luis Robles. The goal was called back after VAR review adjudged Ariola offside.

The rest of the first half played heavily in the Red Bulls’ favor. Large swaths of possession, and shutting down the D.C. attack led to a number of chances for the Red Bulls. Despite an 11 to 2 advantage in shots, the Red Bulls carried only a single goal lead into the break.

Wayne Rooney entered the match in the 57th minute looking to provide the spark D.C. lacked in the first half. Soon after, he nearly provided that spark. After finding Rooney chasing down a long ball at the top of the box, he tangled up with Tim Parker. Both players tumbled to the ground and Rooney wanted a penalty called. None was given.

The Red Bulls fended off a number of chances late, but ultimately held on to the tight scoreline. The win improves the Red Bulls record to 13-5-2 and into second place in the Eastern Conference. No rest for the Red Bulls however, Columbus Crew SC will travel to Red Bull Arena Saturday.

Man of the match

Bradley Wright-Phillips. You have to give it to Wright-Phillips, wracking up 100 league goals is an incredible accomplishment in its own right. Scoring it as a game winning goal against your long time rival is about as storybook as it gets. The man just scores goals. Sit back and enjoy.
